ROSKILL RATES DOWN
ROAD BOARD’S DECISION DRAINAGE LOAN SANCTIONED On the motion of the chairman, Mr. E. F. Jones, the Mount Koskill Hoad Board, at its meeting last evening, struck the rates for the current year. The general rate has been reduced by Id in the £, while other rates for loans, etc., remain at the same figure as last year. A sanitation fee of 10s a year for the collection of household refuse was also agreed to. The rates are payable in one sum on July 1 next, and a cash discount of 5 per cent, will be allowed if paid within 30 days from the date of demand. Advice was received from the Local Government Loans Board that it had given its sanction to the raising of a loan of £62,000 for the drainage of the western area. This amount includes £ 3,000 for advances to those ratepayers installing drainage on their own properties. The rate of interest is not to exceed 55 per cent., with a sinking fund of 15 per cent, for a term of 30 years for the major sum and 10 years for the £3,000. No, portion of interest or sinking fund is to be paid out of loan money. The valuation of the special area is £203,190, but the board has not yet arrived at an exact estimate of the rate to be struck.
With reference to a proposal that the board should take over a Harbour Board reserve on the Manukau foreshore, a legal opinion was read to the effect that there is no power to vest the title in the Road Board and that the Harbour Board was taking steps to have the necessary authority embodied in the next washing-up Bill. The chairman reported that a conference with the Onehunga Borough Council regarding a tram stop between Rose Road and Turama Road, had proved abortive and, on the motion of Mr. G. E. Tansley, the ques was left to the discretion of the Transport Board.
In the opinion of the board’s solicitor the provision in the by-laws lor the concreting of roads in subdivided estates cannot be enforced and he recommended that as modern traffic conditions require a better type of roading, the by-law should be amended by special order. He submitted suggested amendments to the reading by-laws. These were referred to the Works Committee for consideration and report.
The Works Committee was appointed to confer with the Mount Albert Borough Council regarding the reconstruction of Vincent Road and the question of sharing the cost of maintaining the boundary portion of Mount Albert Road.
Tenders, returnable on or before June 24. are to be called for the reconstruction of Selwyn Road between The Drive and Pah Road.
