OVER THE MILLION
CHILDREN ON TRAMS NEW CONCESSION SYSTEM The million mark was passed last year by the school children travelling on the Auckland tramway system. Because of abuses of the concession cards, however, the Auckland Transport Beard decided today to issue tickets through the schols, instead of through ticket agencies. The manager, Mr. A. E. Ford, reported that during the 12 months ended March 31, 1929, 1,696,812 rides had been taken on school concession cards, 786,720 being one-section rides, 539,280 two-section, 251,040 threesections, 92,412 four-section, 14,400 five-section, and 12,960 six-section. The amount of cash taken for the rides was £5,036 Is 3d. Had no concessions been available, children paying half-fare, the revenue would have been £10,045 2s 6d. Based on an estimate that 10 per cent, of the riders were over 15, the revenue was estimated to be £10,552 15s 6d. Because of the abuse of the use of the cards, it was recommended that tickets be issued through the schools in the future, instead of through ticket agencies, as at present. The report and recommendation were adopted.
