RELIEF FOR WORKLESS
GOVERNMENT OFFER TO CITY COUNCIL MAYOR TO INVESTIGATE As the result of a decision of the Finance Committee of the Auckland City Council yesterday, the Mayor of Auckland, Mr. G. Baildon, has been deputed to discuss with the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Sir Joseph Ward at Wellington, the question of the Government’s offer of the sum of £25,000 for the relief of unemployment in the city. rpHE Government has offered a £ for £ subsidy up to £25,000 for expenditure on unemployment relief works which must be approved by the Public Works Department. Toward the end of the last financial year, when the offer was originally made, the City Council did not have the necessary funds in hand to avail itself of the offer. The Mayor suggested at the time that the continuation of the waterfront road might be a useful avenue of expenditure. In Auckland last week, the Prime Minister made it clear that the council need not worry about securing authority to raise the money by loan, implying that the legislation under which local bodies may borrow for relief works without a poll will be renewed.
