League Rugby

HUNTLY Taupiri got it where the chicken got tlio axe on Saturday. Huntly ran up over 30 points to its C. The honours must, on this occasion, lie with the home team. As the visitors were not at full strength, comment cn the game is not * warranted, other than that the winners are now playing at the top of their form and reminiscent of past seasons’ first-class League. Huntly B romped over Ngaruawaliia from a points view, viz.. 224, but the game was closer than the score indicates. Northmore’s speed enabled him to score four tries, and in converting two his tally was 16 points, a good record. O’Brien, Healey and Singer grounded one apiece, the latter also putting one over the bar against two goals by Abbott for the losers. Of the latter, Hill, wing-threequarter, played a grand defensive game, his tackling being faultless, and Abbott at half was good; but the forwards were weak, and only one (Sellars) could be picked out for good play. For the winners, Tom Singer, though playing half for the first time, came through creditably, and Gibson, on the wing, was sound, with Healey and O’Brien doing good work in front.

A pleasing episode was that the erstwhile League rep., Tonga Mahuta, controlled the game, and very efficiently, too, the promptitude of his decisions being noticeable. In his day perhaps there was no more powerful kicker in the code, and he treated tho crowd to some beautiful ball-kick-ing prior to the game.

Taupiri (S), Huntly Colts (G) was the best of the League games on Saturday, and it was anybody’s till Haswell Cattley dropped a field goal for the winners. If anything, the losers had the worst of the luck, two certain tries being lost by bad handling. Hughes and Roberts, one try each for Huntly, and John Cately and Tom Shaw for Taupiri, were the scorers. In placing Has. Cattley (hooker), Shaw (fullback), Cately Brothers and Cochrane (forward) in that order, the good work of the rest is not overlooked, and for the losers Gillings, Singer Brothers, Hughes and Lancaster Brothers, with Roberts, were about the pick. Mr. H. Cattley refereed. Soccer HUNTLY The opening matches of the School Soccer Competitions took place on Saturday, when Huntly A went down by 3 goals to 0, mainly due to a weak forward line. Topliss a penalty, Montford and J. Lees 1 each, were the scorers for the visitors. For the victors, Connew (left half). W. McLean (0.L.) and Groom (back), with Topliss were the pick, thougn the latter is a hefty lad in this class, and will probably be too heavy for the Webster Shield contest at Wellington. Stevens (0.L.), Powell (L.F.8.) and Hunt were the best of the losers.

The new entry for Soccer honours, Kimihia, though coming from the district where the cemetery is situated, are a very “live” little team, and upended the Huntly B team by two goals to one, Rosser notching the winners’ points and Fleming the losers. The result was a surprise for Huntly, but a popular win nevertheless for the Kimihia lads played up well and have some excellent material, young Goodsell (left back) standing out, while his . brother, in goal, was very sound. Emmerson was their best half, while Spiers and Rosser assisted by Craw and Perry, worked hard for the win. The losers’ play lacked finished action. and there was too much hesitation in playing up, though Hanley (centre-half) and Burton (back) played up well and tried hard to avoid defeat.
