OUTBOARD RACE FIASCO
BOATS SCATTERED ABOUT THE CHANNEL SEA SCOURED ALL NIGHT (United. Service J LONDON, Saturday. A race from Dover to Calais and back for outboard motor-boats yesterday was a fiasco, and was abandoned after three hours. Many of the boats became waterlogged and had engine trouble. Some lost their way, some ran out of petrol and drifted helplessly, and one caught on fire. Forty-nine boats left Dover, and it was expected that the leaders would return in under two hours, but not a single boat was then in sight. Tugs, fast motor-cruisers, lifeboats, and yachts put out of Dover and Folkestone, and after much scouring of the Channel in the afternoon and all night long the various competitors were all rescued. They had distressing experiences. There were four women competitors.
