RENE LINTON BURIED

POIGNANT SCENES AT SYDNEY FUNERAL WOMEN RUSH TO VIEW BODY Under a great bank of flowers, the body of Rene Linton, the pretty actress who was murdered by her lover, Strachan Knight, was laid at rest in the Northern Suburbs Cemetery, Sydney. Miss Linton toured New Zealand recently, taking the part of Huguette du Hamel in “The Vagabond King.” Her brother John, and her sister Jean, were the only members of the family at the graveside. With tear-lined faces, they stood clutching each other’s arms as the service was being read by the Rev. Father Pierse. Rene’s brother, dropping to his knees, kissed the lid of the coffin before it was lowered, and then he frantically seized a handful of earth, and, pressing It to his lips, scattered it into the grave.

Mourners Overcome So overcome were many of the mourners at the affecting scene that they walked away with bowed heads, leaving John and Jean kneeling side by side with their heads buried in the flowers that covered the grave. Tender arms of relatives eventually encircled the waists of Rene’s brother and sister, and, sobbing bitterly, they were assisted to their waiting car. Hundreds of morbidly-minded women assembled outside the church of St. Francis Xavier, Lavender Bay, to see the casket borne to the hearse. Undignified Rush Before a short service was read by the Rev. Father Magan, S.J., the lid of the coffin was removed. But there was such an undignified rush by many women In the church to view the body that the lid was promptly replaced. Avenues of approach to the coffin were so obstructed that relatives seeking to place wreaths upon it had difficulty In forcing a passage. And out on the roadway a woman, carrying an infant, loudly shouted directions to the undertaker’s staff as to how the wreaths should be placed on the hearse.
