QUICKER TOLL CALLS
NEW TELEPHONE SYSTHH Press Association HASTINGS, Today. During a talk to the Hastings Rotarians by Mr. H. R. Hounsell, telegraph engineer, on landmarks in the progress of telephone communication, it was mentioned that a system of multiple dialling now being tried out between Wellington and Palmerston North promises to have the important effect of speeding up toll calls between the larger centres. The system was devised by Mr. R. L. Apperley. who joined the Post and Telegraph Department as a lad at Hastings about 15 years ago, and who is now one of the senior mechanicians in the Wellington Automatic Telephone Exchange.
