SERIOUS LABOUR SHORTAGE IN FRANCE WAR BIRTH-RATE BLAMED (Australian, and -V.X. Press Assoo.ation) PARIS, Wednesday. The shortage of labour in France Is becoming increasingly serious. During April the employment exchange in the Department of the Seine registered 15,000 jobs that could not be filled. The shortage of man-power creates more anxiety because there is no sign of an adequate industrial expansion to account for it. On the contrary, the trade balance for several months has been against France, partly owing to the increased customs duties, and the decline of tourist traffic. The shortage of workers is attributed to the reduced birth-rate, during the early years of the war, and the exhaustion of the veterans, who took the soldiers’ places In war time. An appeal has been issued to train all available youths for useful callings.
