Governor General Opens Art Exhibition

Interesting Collection of Local Pictures MANY GUESTS ATTEND The annual exhibition of the Auckland Society of Arts was opened in the Kitchener Hall last evening by their Excellencies the Governor-General and Lady Alice Fergusson. Dr. E. B. KING COUNTRY JOTTINGS (From Our Oicn Correspondent) The annual meeting of the Taumarunui Kit Kat Club was held in the Theatre Royal annexe, with Mr. IT. Brinkman in the chair. It was resolved to continue the club’s activities this season, and the following committee was elected: Mesdames L. King. L. A. Holford, and H. Seddon-Hills. and Messrs. A. E. Tomlinson, L. King, and M. Francis. Dancing comprised the remainder of the evening’s enjoyment. and Mrs. C. R. Murray served supper. * * * A very large attendance, of settlers and townspeople was present for the official opening of the new Te Whakarae Hall (Wanganui River). Mr. G. A. Stanton, chairman of the Taumarunui County Council, performed the opening ceremony, and in liis remarks mentioned that when he first visited the district, goods had all to be packed in by horse over mud roads, whereas now a good motor route went right through. Mr. A. Venn, of Taumarunui. donated a beautiful pair of ladies’ slippers as the prize for a guessing competition, this being won by Mr. L. Bruce. In the intervals between the dances the following contributed items: Misses Robinson, Leydon. Xaylor, K. Leydon, Hughes, and J. Morrell, and Messrs. W. Hughes, Steadman. Hayes, Brannigan, and R. Bruce, and the Bow Tie Club. In aid of the Taumarumii Presbyterian Church funds, an excellent concert was given in the parish hall, the Rev. C. Biierly presiding. There was a good attendance, and the following took part in the programme: Mesdames Maud, Raven, F. Xathan. and Lumley; Misses M. Davis, O. Brierly, X. Arthur, Avery, Raven, Hughes, R. Stevenson, E. Jefferson: and Messrs. W. Hughes, R. Stevenson, E. Calderwood, F. Ashurst, and A. E. Tomlinson. The Matiere Hockey Ladies’ annual ball was well attended, and proved a delightfully arranged event. Pretty decorations, excellent music, and a number of novelty events made the proceedings very interesting. Miss M. Dench and Mr. G. Box won the spot waltz. Miss Bradshaw and Mr. Turner the mystery waltz, and Misses L. Kelly and C. Price the Monte Carlo. Toward midnight paper hats, streamers, confetti, and jazz trumpets were dis- ; tributed to the gathering, and merrt- ; mem reigned supreme till an early hour. * * The Retaruke Basketball Club dance was a very pleasant function, attracting patrons from all the surrounding localities. The pretty decorations were a feature of the event, the club’s colours —blue and white—being charmingly arranged with native ferns and shrubs. Messrs. Lewis, Garrie, J. Dempsey, and X. Schofield supplied the music. Misses M. Dempsey and R. Rutherford acted an amusing dialogue entitled “Pat’s Letter.’’ A guessing competition was won by Mrs. Perry, and the Monte Carlo waltz went to Miss G. Dobbs and Mr. W. Scott. The women of the Taumarunui Anglican Church organised a pleasant dance in the parish hall, for which the music was supplied by the popular Star Orchestra. Extras were given by Miss Jefferson and Mr. W. Melrose, the latter of whom filled the office of M.C. Mr. R. Robson and partner won the Monte Carlo waltz. This was the opening dance of a fortnightly series which the ladies’ guild plans to run during the winter months in aid of the church funds. The annual social conducted by the E. and B. Tennis Club, Ongarue, to mark the close of the season, attracted

a large attendance. In addition to rho dancing, items were contributed by Mrs. A. 11. Delaney, Misses K. Treacy, ; R. McCracken, and Messrs. J. Martin and M. P. Meehan. In the course of i the proceedings. Mr. J. Caird presented the Delaney Shield to rho Ongarue Club, the winenrs of the trophy , for the season. Mr. D. J. Gardiner. president of the winning club, accepting. Mr. A. H. Delaney handed to the winners various trophies won 1 during the season. The gathering also took the occasion of bidding farewell to Mr. J. Broadfoot. of the local post office staff, who has been transferred to Paparoa. Speaking for those present, Mr. Gardiner presented Mr. proadfoot with a travelling rug and wallet ! containing a cheque. The gifts were i suitably acknowledged.
