GAOL INMATE AGAIN CONVICTED WHAKATANE EPISODE As he is at present serving a term of imprisonment for a similar offence, Rigby Brooks Beilerby’s sentence was not increased when he pleaded guilty at the Police Court this morning on a charge of operating a valueless cheque. Bellerby, a share-milker aged 36. was said to have obtained £2 7s and goods valued at £ 1 13s 6d from John Andrew Bock at Whakatane on April 17. Chief-Detective Hammond reminded the court that Bellerby was serving a term of six months’ imprisonment, which had been imposed following his conviction on May 15. “There is m> need to increase the term,” he added. PENALTY OF SIX MONTHS FOR LABOURER Paying in advance for a room at the Y.M.C.A. with a valueless cheque is a practice that was frowned upon by Mr, F. K. Hunt. S.M., in the Police Court this morning. Daniel Hebley, a labourer, aged 33, pleaded guilty on a charge of obtaining £9 Is from the clerk at the Y.M.C.A. by means of a valueless cheque on May 11. He also appeared for sentence, having formerly pleaded guilty to being idle and disorderly, having insufficient lawful means of support. According to Chief-Detective Hammond, Hebley had been discharged from gaol on May 7 after serving a sentence for passing bogus cheques. •He had gone to the Y.M.C.A. and j booked a room which he had paid for in advance with a cheque for £lO ss, receiving £9 Is as change. “He ! drank the money,” continued the chief- ! detective. “Hebley has been drink- | ing very heavily since he got ont of J gaol. He showed his cunning by go- ; ing to a place like the Y.M.C.A.” (Hebley was sentenced to a term of six months’ imprisonment and convicted and discharged on the count of | vagrancy.
