MR. J. H. UPTON’S FUNERAL CIVIC REPRESENTATIVES In a striking tribute to the late Mr. J. H. Upton* about 350 personal friends, representatives of public bodies, and business associates attended the service yesterday in St. Mary’s Cathedral before the funeral at Waikumete Cemetery. In the evening - , further tributes were made at the meeting of the Auckland Institute and Museum, and at the exhibition held by the Auckland Society of Arts. Mr. H. E. Vaile, president of the institute, said that Mr. Upton had been a member for nearly sixty years and had been president on several occasions. He had been chairman of the Trust Board. At the Art Society’s exhibition, Hr. E. B. Gunson, the president, said that Mr. Upton's death had been a real loss to the community. He had served art considerably, and had been chairman of tho Mackelvie Trust. Canon P. T. Williams conducted the service at St. Mary’s. Those in attendance included the Primate, Archbishop Averill. Over fifty cars were in the cortege, and over two hundred wreaths were carried in four cars. The wreaths included those from the City Council, the Northern Steamship Company, the Northern Roller Mills, the Bank of New Zealand, the Institute and Museum, the Savings Bank, the Gas Company and the South British Insurance Company. zz
