Takapuna Secures Big Relief Subsidy
£12,000 AVAILABLE WORKS IN THE BOROUGH For the relief of unemployment, £12,000 will be available for works in the Takapuna Borough immediately. Mr. Alexander Harris, M.P. for Waitemata, returned with this news from Wellington by the Limited this morping. The Takapuna Borough Council decided, a few days ago, to raise by special loan £4,000 under the Local Authorities Relief of Unemployment Act, and in addition, allocated a further £2,000 for unemployment relief out of the borough revenue this year. The work decided on by the council is of a capital expenditure nature within the borough, primarily in the construction of new footpaths. Realising the urgency of relief in view of the present position of unemployment, Mr. Harris made full representations to the Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward, during his special visit to Wellington on behalf of the borough. . . Mr. Harris asked for a provisional approval of the £1 for £1 basis of Government subsidy. This was on the whole amount of £6,000, and Mr. Harris explained that the work wus to be begun at once. The Prime Minister agreed to tne necessary authorisation. “I keenly appreciated Sir Josepn Ward’s ready response to the request,” Mr. Harris said this morning. “The work will mea.ll a considerable amount of relief.”
