STONE FRUIT GROWERS
ASSOCIATION’S FIRST YEAR The Auckland Tomato and Stone Fruit Growers’ Association held its first annual meeting last evening. The report stated that the initial meeting of the association had been held at the instance of the Auckland Provincial Fruit Growers’ Council, Ltd., in September, 1927, when a provisional committee was formed. The work up to the end of 1928 had been mainly of a preparatory nature, the first considerations being organisation and membership. At the end of last year the membership was 91. Questions regarding the registration of growers’ brands, railway transport and the Auctioneers’ Bill were discussed at a Dominion conference held at Wellington in January, and representations had been made to the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. G. W. Forbes, and to the General Manager of Railways. Mr. 11. A. Sterling. The president, Mr. S. W. House, reported on the steps taken to secure a revision of the tariffs on fruit, jam and other commodities, and he hoped that something would result for the protection and beenfit of the association. It was decided that the delegates to the Dominion Conference should press for registration of tomato growers on a basis similar to that on which the orchardists were registered. Officers were elected as follow: President, Mr. S. W. House; vice-presi-dents, Messrs. G. Charman and F, Pirth; secretary and treasurer, Mr. G- A. Green: committee, Messrs. J. Armstrong, G. Harrison. S. W. Hills, Xicolls, A. Freeman (Otahuhu), A. Currie, G. Johnson (Avondale), A. Wakefield (Mangere), A. S. Hines-(Al-bany), F. Causley (Thames) and J. Wordsworth (Whangarei); delegates to Fruitgrowers’ Provincial Conference (to be held in Auckland in June), Messrs. G. Harrison. G. A. Green. A. Wakefield and G. Charman.
