MURDER AT WELLINGTON WITNESS NOT LOCATED Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. After three remands, Erie Matthews, a naval petty officer, was charged with murdering John Stevens on May 8. Evidence was given by Dr. Lynch and George W. Orme, proprietor of the coffee stall, where the murder took place, on the lines of the evidence at the inquest. Detective Kearney said he had endeavoured in vain to discover the witness who was alleged to have been arguing with Stevens in the pie-cart. Accused’s statement .to the police said he had gone to the stall intoxicated and struck deceased, who was using offensive language. He remembered nothing more until he returned to the ship. Accused was committed to the Supreme Court for trial.
