PROPOSED INCREASE IN RATES In answer to an inquiry from Mr. J. S. Wilson regarding the kind of material that is to be used in additions to buildings already erected, in the inner area, the Papatoetoe Town Board decided last evening, that brick, stone or concrete was necessary. The clerk was authorised to instruct Mr. "Wilson that no additional kerbside petrol pumps would be permitted within the town district, and it would not consider the installation of petrol tanks under the footpath. A sum of £2. 2s was donated to the Chamber of Commerce toward defraying the cost of a personal canvass of telephone subscribers', urging the installation of a continuous telephone service at the Papatoetoe exchange. A letter was received from Messrs. Cadbury and Frys, Ltd., stating that their representatives would visit Papatoetoe before coming to a final decision regarding the site for their model settlement, and commenting on the p hlic spirit displayed by the Papatoetoe Welfare League and the Town Board. A recommendation by the water engineer that the tender of Messrs. Willcox and Company for the installation of a mechanical water level indicator at the cost of £l4 was adopted. The clerk reported that the district fund account was in debit £2,087 17s 9d. The chairman ot* the Finance Committee reported that the water loan debentures were selling freely at 54 per cent. The chairman of the Works Committee submitted estimates for the current year totalling £1,500. Road work accounted for £ 651 9s, drainage £lB7, footpaths £515 7s, permanent levels £6O and contingencies £B7. The estimates were approved. Mr. Nicholson. chairman of the Finance Committee, gave notice, of his intention to move at the nqxt meeting that the total rates be 64d in the £ for the present year.
