RELIEF SUBSIDIES
MONEY FOR ONEHUNGA NEW COROMANDEL ROAD Subsidies totalling £6BS for unemployment relief works in Onehunga have just been made available by the Government, according to advice received from the Minister of Public Works by Mr. W. J. Jordan, M.P. The Government will subsidise work on the Onehunga recreation ground at the pound for pound rate up to £4OO, and will pay another £2SS on other relief works in the borough. The total of authorised pound for pound subsidies is now £2.600, of which £1.972 has been paid. £ 62S being still available. Mr. A. M. Samuel, M.P., has received information from the Minister of Public Works that Cabinet. has decided that relief workers shall immediately be employed on the construction of the Hikuai-Tairua-Whenuakite Road, and that the necessary authority has already been issued to the District Engineer of Public Works in Auckland to start the work as soon as possible.
This road will enable travellers to make the round trip through Thames, Coromandel and Mercury Bay, returning by way of Hot Water Beach, Tairua. Whangamata, Waihi and Paeroa. which should make a most popular motor tour.
