had returned for shelter The American steamer Golden Cross, which left Auckland at 4.30 p.m. yesterday for Honolulu and San Francisco, returned to port last evening. and dropped her anchor off Devonport shortly after 10 o’clock. According to Captain G. M. Curtis, weather conditions were held to be against navigation with a vessel in so light a trim as the Golden Cross. A very heavy sea was running outside Tiri. and with a thick, heavy rain it was almost impossible to see nnv lights.
