Red Fuchsia and Kawini Go Well Over Sticks Today

Steady rain all night and up till after breakfast time left little room for doubt that it was the winter meeting that was approaching, for it was bitterly cold at Ellerslie this morning, the semi-final gallops for the Great Northern meeting opening on Saturday being carired out under most unpleasant conditions. Fortunately the rain

cleared off at about 9 o’clock. For the speed tests number one grass was thrown open. and the hurdles on the outside of the course proper, as well as those on the inner, and the full steeplechase course were

also available. There was a lot of jumping, several nice exhibitions being given by Great Northern candidates. As was only to be expected, the going was heavy, and the prospects are that the course itself will be at least heavy for the first day’s rac-

Perhaps the best efforts of the morning were registered by the following horses, the races in parentheses indicating the event each one is to contest on Saturday:

BISOX (Cornwall Handicap). CHELONE (Members’ Handicap). KAWINI (G.N. Hurdles). RED FUCHSIA (G.N. Hurdles). Details of the more important work uts follow.

The Hurdlers Over the hurdles on the outside of the course proper many horses worked, several interesting displays being given. Golden'Wedding (L. Husband), Salamander (H. Jones), War Officer (W. Rowe) and Adjuster went once round (five hurdles). Salamander crashed at the first fence and War Officer at the third. Golden Wedding finishing a long way in front of Adjuster in 2.33 1-5. giving a very fair exhibition. Salamander was remounted and went over the full round, and War Officer was also remounted and got over his last two. slowly but surely. Master Clements (C. Regan) alone jumped four of these hurdles, giving a much improved display. A Grand Showing All eyes were on Red Fuchsia (A. McDonald) and Kawini (R. Olive), when they were sent out to do a complete round of the big sticks. Kawini jumped too big at the first and pecked on landing, his companion not being too sure of himself here. However, after this they settled down to give a fine showing, getting over the second, third and fourth in rare style. Both rapped the last without losing any ground. It was an interesting piece of work, and showed both horses to be in splendid fettle. The time was really fast, 2.24. Master Doon (L. Husband) and Kamehameha (F. McGovern) failed to show as much pace when they went once round, both jumping rather slowly and doing the five hurdles on the circuit in 2.35 2-5. Mister Gamp Hits Hard Comical (IT. Burt) apparently r* membered the hurdle where he fell on Saturday, the fence at the seven furlongs. for he blundered here when in company with Mister Gamp (A. Hobson) over a round of the battens, but recovered well. At the third obstacle Comical clearly out jumped Mister Gamp, and they rose at the last fence together. Here Mister Gamp did not rise sufficiently, and he gave the top panel a hefty boot, but he landed on his pins and kept up, recovering smartly. Had it been on the day the horse rather than the fence would have had to give, way. The pace was on, too. for it took them 2.24 2-5. E3ach horse made mistakes, which on the day would spoil their chances.

Cybele (Foster > showed to much more advantage than Locarno (A. Mc-

Donald) over four hurdles, the forme: giving a smooth exhibition. Locarno was a bit uncertain in his jumping, blundering at the third. The time over the four fences was 1.34. so there could not have been a great deal of pace on. Odin (G. Holland! gave a fair display over four hurdles, improving as he progressed and taking thb last in fine style. Karamu (A. McGregor) negotiated two schooling hurdles and then was galloped strongly on the grass. He looks in good condition. Optimistic (H. Jones! went over four of the schooling hurdles, shaping pleasingly. Over the Hill Just on 10 a.m. the steeplechase course was thrown open, the first to use it being Maidos (M. Conway). Mountain Crag (P. Adams), and Vexatious (C. Robinson). They all gave a perfectly satisfactory exhibition, but Vexatious, who had taken charge shortly after the start to lead all the way, was the star, her jumping being much superior to that of Maidos and Mountain Crag. The latter finished a long way behind his companions at the end, having commenced to bleed with half the journey covered. Uralla (L. Watson) and Young Thurnham (Nelson) were paired off, but at the first fence on top of the hill Young Thurnham lost his rider. Uralla continuing on to negotiate the remainder of the course. Uralla s jumping was d. little at fault, and she made one or two good recoveries. Young Thurnham was remounted and sent over the sod wall and then the waterjump. falling at this fence. He was not further persevered with. Airtight (H. Pitcon) and Pikimai (M. Conway) successfully completed a circuit of the steeplechase course. Airtight gave a very pleasing display and is a fine jumper, but Pikimai had to be ridden into his fences, hitting one or two fairly hard. On the Fiat The first to appear before breakfast were the Cornwall Handicap candidates, Bisox, Corinax and The Lover, and this trio provided one of the most interesting gallops seen during 'the morning. They were mounted b> light boys, Bisox in particular having nothing * but a feather-weight. fcihe fulfilled expectations, too, running on strongly at the right end, with Corinax (travelling fairly easily) a length and a-half away, and The Lover several lengths back. There was no loitering on the journey, the Hawera representative going over the ground in good style to record 1.58 1-5, the last seven furlongs in 1.37 3-5, and the last half-mile in 56_ 2-5._ They ran their last mile in 1.50 4-5. Cool Mint was doing better than both Thursby and Kawainga at the end of six furlongs in 1.23 1-5. the last three in 41. Their effort is all the more pleasing in that they went from a stand. Cornwall Candidates Hyde Park had an advantage over High Pitch when this pair travelled over seven furlongs in 1.37 1-5. the final six in 1.23 2-5. Both were under a steady hold at the end. For the last six of seven furlongs Bright Land registered 1.23. After breakfast Hoariri was a trifle sore when he stepped on to the track, but that did not prevent him from racing over three furlongs in 39 4-5. Beau Cavalier and Abbot’s Delight were going steadily side by side at the end of once round in 2.4 2-5. the last mile in 1.56 4-5.

After bringing Eager Rose over the first six furlongs Theodolite was eased up. Eager Rose going on to finish the circuit in 2-3. Overhaul and a companion covered a round in 2.6 4-5. Prior to schooling Golden Wedding ran seven furlongs in 1.40 1-5. the first three in 41. Yalsier registered 54 3-5 for the last half-mile of his work. Roman Pearl and Taneriri were paired over six furlongs, and going from a stand kept together all the way to finish up in 1.21 4-s—good time. Welkne pleased by moving ovei seven furlongs in 1.35 4-5, the first three in 40 and four in 52 2-5. He continues to show improvement. Sleepy Sol was never exerted to cover a round in 2.7 3-5. A Smart Sprint Black Duke, Keddar and Oration were in company over live furlongs, returning 1.7 1-5 for the trip. Black Duke appealed by the convincing manner in which, being on the extreme outside, he defeated Keddar, and is sure to be in demand at the meeting. Oration made a poor showing, and is apparently a horse of moods. Lady’s Boy and Mountain Guide were both moving comfortably at the end of six * furlongs, the last half mile in 56 Standfast and Modest Boy were partners over seven furlongs, both doing it pleasingly at the end to register 1.24 1-5 for the last six. Kauri Park finished in advance of Clockwork over a round in 2.6 3-5. Chelone demonstrated his brilliancy by dashing over four furlongs in 51 3-5. He is in fine fettle just now. and
