LANIER DEFAULTS
STILL IN AUCKLANDLAST MINUTE DECISION Deciding at the last minute not to sail for America on the O. and O. Line steamer Golden Cross yesterday afternoon, as arranged, Robert White Lanier, the “smiling South Pole boy," is still in Auckland. Lanier made all arrangements for his departure, attended at the American Consul’s office yesterday afternoon. and was on Prince’s Wharf when the Golden Cross sailed from her berth there. He suddenly decided not to go. As he is a prohibited immigrant, the Customs Department will be responsible for his deportation. Officials here are awaiting instructions from the head office at Wellington before talcing any action. The owners of the Goldeu Cross also own the Golden State, the vessel on which Lanier came to this country. They are. consequently, under bond to return him to the United States of America.
