TRAINS LOSE £11,000.000 IN THREE YEARS

The Commonwealth Transport Committee has prepared a report dealing with the railway mileage and cost thereof throughout Australia, also on other transport systems. The railway mileage in Australia is 25,505, and the capital cost £312,000,000 of which £300,000,000 is for Stateowned railways. The effect of motor and other competition with the railways is shown by the fact that within the last three years the railway losses amounted almost to £11,000,000. The committee estimates the number of motor vehicles in Australia at 565,000. The value of privately-owned motor-cars is £100,000,000, while the capital cost of all" railways, roads, ports and harbours is set down at £500,000,000.
