IN BUNNIKIN LAND
(First Prize Story.) Air. and Mrs. Bunny lived in a burrow under a gorse bush. “An ideal place,” Mrs. Bunny said. One day the whole family, which numbered five, went out to get some turnips and carrots from the farm of Farmer Giles. The sun shone down brightly, and there was no breeze, so that the little children, Flossie, Benjamin and baby Bobble-tail, walked very slowly. But at last they reached there, and they squeezed under the gate and scampered to the biggest turnip or carrot they could find. Suddenly there was a thud! thud! and the figure of Farmer Giles came into sight. Also a gun. Flossie, Benjamin, Bobble-tail, and Mrs. Bunny ran off, but Air. Bunny had eaten too much for breakfast, so he could not run quickly. Then came a bang, and Air. Bunny lay dead. It was Sunday in Bunnikin Land, and a procession df weeping rabbits, all clad in black, marched down the hillside. This was the funeral of Mr. Bunny. The service was very long, and it was interrupted 'by several groans and sobs. Airs. BunnjL was very sad until she fell in love with a very charming bunny, Mr. Peter White. The marriage was three days after the funeral. It shows how long bunnies mourn. —Joan Duthie (aged 10).
