SCOUT DAY

BOYS REWARDED THIS MORNING TENTS PRESENTED roof of the Farmers’ Trading Co. presented an animated scene this morning, when Scout troops were rewarded for their efforts on Scout Day, May 21. Scout Day was planned that “Scouts will earn what they get,” and aid the Scout movement by the efforts of the boys themselves. The lads acted as salesmen at the Farmers’, distributing coupons which, when presented at the various departments of the Farmers’ Trading Co., credited each troop with a percentage on the sales effected. The total for the day for each troop was averaged to get the individual amount, thus giving each troop an equal chance. • As a result the Farmers* Trading Co. was able to present the Boy Scouts’ Association with £2OB 10s. The troop competition resulted as follow’s: Fame Sea Scout Co., 1; Hawke Sea Scout Co., 2; Herne Bay Troop, 3. * As a rew’ard for the work the boys had put into the day the winners were presented with three Scout tents this morning by Mr. D. Robertson, assistant general manager of the Farmers’ Trading Co. The second troop received two tents and the third troop one tent. In congratulating the boys on their work Mr. Robertson quoted from a speech delivered to business men by a Scout authority as follows: AVe deprecate the boys going round and begging for things, which is becoming all too common. In Englana every cricket und football club formea by boys goes around with the nu.z. They learn the habit and when they want anything they go around say “Give us something.” Our boys ai taught when they want their hats or their poles they must work for The greatest help you can give th em is to offer them a job and then they se_ they must work in order to get the monev. ~ , . .
