VERSATILE DAWE

FAREWELL PERFORMANCE TONIGHT Versatile Clem Da we and his clever company will give their farewell performance of the present season at His Majesty’s tonight, and apart from the intrinsic merits of the players in their several original sketches many may be inclined to go along again, just, as it were, for sentiment’s sake. At the farewell performance this evening an entirely new programme of songs, dances, sketches, jazz creations and new novelties will be presented, and each visitor to the theatre will be presented with a souvenir, which will include photos of each member of the company. Last evening the company again whiled away pleasant hours for a good house. Dawe’s remarkable ability in varied parts strikes one at every fresh presentation. Mona Magnet is living up to her name, and the other members are sustaining a healthy reputation for excellent entertainment. The orchestral performance under IvanoiT was first-rate last evening, with favourites from “The Singing Fool” winning topical approval. AL JOLSON COMPETITION WINNER ANNOUNCED The Al Jolson Competition arranged by the management of the Plaza Theatre and published in The Sun on May 11, 15 and 18, aroused considerable interest among readers and a large number of replies was received. The winning drawing is that sent in by Mrs. Ruby Hudson, Servia Street, Newton, who writes of Al Jolson as follows: “Al Jolson brings to his part a versatility that is positively amazing and a deep sincerity of feeling that stamps him as an actor of first rank. Not only does he act “straight" with a keen sense of dramatic value, but he performs a lot of “gagging” which is clever.” The next best drawings and descriptions were those of Miss M. Ivelly (Mt. Eden), Miss T. Clarke (Dominion Road), Mr. Al Alsow (Box 471, City), Miss B. Annan (Ellerslie), Mrs. J. Bain (Remuera), Miss N. Chandler (Herne Bay), Mr. G. Hastings (Devonport), Miss M. Bowering (Eden Terrace), Mr. J. Wasey (Grey Lynn) and Mr. Noel Ireland (Onehunga). Tickets for “The Singing Fool” performance will be forwarded from the Plaza Theatre early next week.
