THEFT FROM CLOTHING

YOUTH GIVEN PROBATION FATHER BRADLEY’S GOOD INFLUENCE A youth who was unable to resist the temptation to plunge a hand in a man’s pocket and extract £2 10s, was given a chance at the Police Court today. The youth, for whom Mr. J. J. Sullivan pleaded guiltv, was charged with stealing £2 10s. According to Chief-Detective Hammond, the youth, who was aged IS, had been in the dressing-room at a seed store when he had taken the money from a roll of £7 which he had found in the pocket of a pair of trousers. The youth had spent Ss, and the two pound notes had been found by the detectives concealed in his sock. "He was working for a city firm, but was discharged some few days ago,” continued the chiefdetective. "He did not tell his parents, who are very respectable people, and evidently stole this money so that it would represent his salary. He is already on probation for an offence committed at Hamilton, but full restitution has been made in that case.” Mr. Sullivan said that his client was weak mentally and asked for further probation. “Father Bradley will look after him,” he said. Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.: Father Bradley used to help me in the court and I remember that boys placed under his care never came back. Father Bradley considered that the main trouble was that the youth had been in uncongenial employment. The 3 r outh’s term of probation was extended by six months. “Tf it were not for Father Bradley you would go to the Borstal,” said the magistrate. An appeal for suppression of the name was granted.
