50 YEARS MARRIED

MR. AND MRS. A. McGILP, BIRKENHEAD POLICE FORCE VETERAN On Sunday next Mr. and Mrs. Alexunder McGilp. of Hincmoa Street. Birkenhead, will celebrate their golden wedding. | They were married by~ the Rev. George Brown in the Presbyterian ! Church, Onehunga, on May 26, 1579. and the veteran minister. now in his 96th year, is still resident in Onehunga. Mr. McGilp, who was born in Argyll - j shire, Scotland, on October 14, 1847, i started off in life as a shepherd on his grandparents* property in Scotland. ; and later travelled to New Zealand by the ship Orari in IST6. He joined the police force, and was j stationed at and the Bay of j Island for a number of years. He j later served at Cambridge, Waipu, j Grey Lynn and Birkenhead, and reI tired from the force after 35 years’ I service. Mrs. McGilp, who is a daughter of the late Mr. William Marlborough ! Douglas, was born at Lisnavagli. County Carlow, Ireland, on January IS. j 1557. The family came out to New ! Zealand by the ship Yerdale during the j Maori Wars.

Mr. and Mrs. McGilp had 10 children. Four daughters, two of whom are married, and three sons, Messrs. Alexander D. McGilp and L. Donald McGilp, of Birkenhead, and Mr. Douglas A. McGilp, of Great South Road, Bllerslie, are living. The second son was the late Major Cly*de McGilp. D. 5.0.. who went to the South African War when he was only 17 years old. He also served in the Great War, going in the Main Body from New Zealand and taking part in the Gallipoli landing and evacuation.
