Postmaster Killed By Napier Express
WALKING ACROSS LINE SON WITNESSES ACCIDENT Press Association NAPIER, Thursday. With his son as a horrified witness Mr. John Corless, aged 73, postmaster at Poukawa, was knocked down and killed instantly within sight of his home by the Wellington-Napier express this afternoon. Mr. Corless had just left the southbound train from Hastings, where he had been on business, and was crossing the lines on his way home, with his hands In his pockets and his head bent. Apparently he did not see the north-bound express, which was travelling at a brisk speed. He was struck by the cowcatcher of the engine and flung along and off the line. He was dead when picked up. The express was brought to a standstill immediately and the body was taken on to Hastings. Deceased, who was a widower, had an adult family of three.
