DAYLIGHT SAVING

DISAPPROVAL EXPRESSED DESCRIBED AS “CURSE” Unanimously, with the exception of one member, the Farmers’ Union Conference, expressed its objection to Daylight Saving today. It was described as a curse by one speaker. A remit from Opotiki asked that Daylight Saving be not again introduced into the Dominion, as it was not in the interests of the farming community. Mr. Moody moved the remit, saying that the whole of the legislation should be abolished. Mr. S. Petrie (Marahemo) opposed the remit, saying that the extra time allowed a longer rest in the middle of the day, enabling the work to be done in the cool of the evening. “Daylight Saving was one of the greatest curse 3 ever put on the farmer,” said Mr. E. Babe. “I hope that this remit goes through hot and strong! Are you going to stand for daylight saving for your wives atfd children? Why should we be hindered to give other people an hour’s play?” “Personally, I am in favour of daylight saving,” said Mr. J. H. Dawson. “It Is ridiculous to waste sunlight in the morning and then sit up after dark.” IN THE GLOAMING Mr. C. C. Munro: Mr. Dawson forgets that he is past the age when he should sit up after dark. "I am in favour of the remit. New Zealand has certainly made farmers’ work an extra hour.” Other speakers supported the remit, and Mr, Henry Barter said that daylight saving had stopped farmers in getting some of their milk and cream supplies from reaching factories and early trains in time. Mr. Bruce Dennis referred to the difficulties of connecting with lorry services under daylight saving. He referred to the hardship imposed on mothers of young families. “There is no other argument in favour of daylight saving than the benefit to sports people,” Mr. A. E. Robinson said. "We are not here to support city sports people.” Mr. W. Boyd said there was nothing to prevent city people from rising earlier. The remit was carried. A remit from the executive asking the conference to object to any interference with standard time was bracketed with the approved remit.
