OFFICER’S CLUB

New Premises to Be Opened GALLIPOLI PAINTINGS With its walls adorned with a number of mementoes of the war , and a full set of the paintings by Mr. H. Moor e-Jones of the landing at Gallipoli, the spacious new quarters of the Auckland Officers’ Club (Inc.), will be opened this evening by the Governor-General , Sir Charles Fergusson. The new rooms, which are situated on the top floor of the/Queen’s Arcade Building, in Customs Street East, are among the largest of their kind in the city. An outstanding feature is the lighting of the suite, as windows occupy over half the wall space and a fine electric lighting system has been installed. The accommodation consists of a billiards room, a reading room, a social and card room, and a luncheon room. Besides the series of Gallipoli pictures mentioned there are on the walls other series depicting scenes in France and Palestine. There is also an old print showing Queen Victoria presenting the first Victoria Cross. A record of the Auckland Regiment has been preserved by photographs of a number of first officers, and reproductions of all the commanding officers. Photos of many of the Governors and Governor-Generals of New Zealand also adorn the walls. Captain Percy Salmond presented the Officers’ Club with the coat of arms of the famous Cloth Hall at Ypres, and it also is to be seen there. At the entrance hangs the old colours of the Auckland Regiment which were superseded about a month ago when the First Battalion of the regiment accepted new colours from England in a picturesque ceremony on the Domain. Beneath the old colours is mounted a brass plate on which is inscribed the names of the members of the club who fell during the Great War. The president of the club is Lieut.Colonel T. H. Dawson, C.M.G., C.8.E., and he will preside at this evening’s ceremony.
