Auckland Jockey Fatally Injured

E. WARNER’S DEATH FALL AT WANGANUI Gala s Day’s 13th race over hurdles was a disastrous one, for when the horse fell in that contest it resulted in his rider, E. Warner, receiving severe facial and internal injuries from which he succumbed six hours later. was at Wanganui on Saturday. Gala Day had won the Hack Hurdles there on the Thursday previous, and despite the rise in weigh*, he was fancied again on Saturday. Gala Hay was racing prominently until the field rose at the fourth fence, just over five furlongs from home. Gala Hay rose, too, but he went through the top panel and fell heavily, .-hooting Warner on to the ground. The jockey was obviously badly injured, and he was at once taken to hospital, arriving there not long after the accident. The injured man never rallied and died at 6 p.m.—a little over six hours after the mishap. And so has passed one of the Hominion’s leading horsemen over the jumps,

a dashing rider, but withal a model of patience in a race. Warner has piloted Pouri in most of his engagements, and scored a mild surprise on him in the Wellington Steeplechase last season, and a month later filed the role of runner-up to Wiltshire in the Grand National. Incidentally, Warner was to have ridden Pouri in the Great Northern Hurdles and Great Northern Steeplechase at Ellerslie next month, a double event for which Pouri was more than a little fancied. Among the late E. Warner’s other successes were the Grand National Steeplechase on the outsider Sturdee, Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase on Oakleigh, and the, Pakuranga Hunt Cup twice, on Koura and Glentui. Warner has had many falls in his long career as a jockey, and as a result of one severe crash he had a plate inserted in his skull. The untimely death of jockey E. Warner will be received with the deepest regret m all sporting circles, and for his widow and three children the greatest sympathy is expressed.
