SOVIET SHIP AT BASRA
POLICE MOUNT AN ARMED GUARD BANKS DECLINE BUSINESS (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 11 a.m. BASRA, Sunday. Directly the Soviet steamer Kommunist berthed here the Iraq police mounted an armed guard and only the captain was allowed ashore, where all the banks declined to negotiate the ship’s documents. The ship’s cargo is mostly matches, sugar and lamps. The cause of the police action is £48,750 aboard, which is believed to be destined to rekindle trouble among the workers on the oilfields.
