GOVERNOR’S FAREWELL
SPEECH AT ORPHANS’ CLUB “HAPPIEST RECOLLECTIONS” Although, as he said, the time had not come for valedictory remarks, his Excellency the Governor-General (Sir Charles Fergusson) expressed on Saturday evening, when he presided over a meeting of the Auckland Orphans’ Club, his appreciation and that of Lady Alice Fergusson of the kindness he had received during his stay in New Zealand. “I shall take away with me,” he said, “the happiest recollections of the pleasant evenings that I have passed with my brother-orphans.” Replying, the president of the club (Mr. J. B. Johnston) thanked his Excellency for taking the chair, and said that the goodwill and esteem of every member of the club would accompany Sir Charles when he left the Dominion. Professor H. E. Dettman, an ex-vice-president of the club, also spoke. As the meeting was probably the last which his Excellency will be able to attend before leaving New Zealand, the attendance was particularly large. An enjoyable instrumental and vocal programme was presented, numbers being given by the club’s orchestra, under Mr. H. Baxter, and Messrs. J. Simpson, E. Snell, T. Harris, D. Flood, W. Hicks, R. Richards, N. Day, and the New Zealand Four.
