Red Fuchsia By a Head

SURPRISE BY VEXATIOUS BENZORA’S FINE WIN (Special to THE SUN) WANGANUI, Saturday. j j The Wanganui Jockey Club’s winter I i meeting was concluded today in glorij ous weather, with a very large attend- ; ance, which was reflected in the totalisator turnover, the amount handled I being £ 28,113, compared with j £27,041 10s on the concluding day last j year. The total for the meeting was £48,891 10s, against £49,795 for the 192 S fixture, a decrease of only £903 10s. In view of Thursday’s weather the result must be considered exceptionally good. Casualties When Gala Day fell in the Rata Hurdles E. Warner was seriously injured. He was sent to hospital with severe facial and internal injuries and he passed away at 6 p.m. W. J. Bowden's injury, when Glengariff fell in the May Hurdles, consisted of slight concussion. He soon recovered. Spearmiss made a great run to score in the Empire Handicap from Ruanui, who went to the front, perhaps too soon. Benzora was confidently expected to run a good race in the Winter Oats and duly materialised. The victories of these two were well received in certain quarters. Red Fuchsia registered a sterling performance in the May Hurdles. Shrewd finished gamely in the Balgownie Hack, and Havering’s victory in the Farewell was another well earned. Rata Hurdles The opening event proved a much better race for the totalisator than the first on Thursday. Red Bank £523 and Cybele £384 were well backed, as i also were Tiega £331. Gala Day £330 land Raukaponga £327. Joy King ; went to the front at barrier rise, followed by Paul Lucerne, Red Bank, Vivo and Gala Day. When they raced up the straight he was followed by Gala Day, Red Bank, Tiega, Paul Lucerne, Vivo, Overhaul, Ali Baba, Cybele and Otairi. Red Bank went into the lead at the fence just past the six furlongs, where Gala Day crashed. Following the leader were Paul Lucerne, Cybele, Otairi, Tiega, Overhaul and Vivo. Red Bank and Otairi came over the fence at the three furlongs ahead of Cybele. Paul Lucerne, Tiega, Wilmoreana and Vivo. Grand Lupin coming to grief. Red Bank jumped the last fence just in front of Otairi, Cybele and Tiega, and came on to win by three-quarters of a length. Tiega got up on the post to cut Otairi out of second place by a head. Cybele being close up fourth and Wilmoreana next. Vivo, Overhaul and Paul Lucerne followed. Balgownie Hack The eleven acceptors paraded for the Balgownie Hack. Goodwill, £849, was preferred to Shrewd, £574, and Monsogne, £486, Disrank being sixth in favour, carrying £374. When they were let go. Vindication was the leader, being followed out of the straight by Royal Acre, Tunbridge, Shrewd. Sylvan Dell, Monsogne, Disrank, Umtali. and Goodwill. At the six furlongs Vindication and Shrewd were

followed by Royal Acre. Monsogne, Tunbridge, Umtali, and Disrank. Before they reached the three furlongs, Shrewd had taken the lead from Vindication, Monsogne, Tunbridge, Kilburn, and Royal Acre. Monsogne followed Shrewd into the straight, Tunbridge, Disrank, and Royal Acre being next. Shrewd held his own in the run home, and managed to stall off a iate challenge by Disrank to win by a neck, Monsogne being a length away third. Next to finish were Royal Acre, Tunbridge, Goodwill, Sylvan Dell. Umtali, and Kilburn. May Hurdles Red Fuchsia was elected favourite for the May Hurdles, carrying £1,037, —three times as much as Glengariff, £555. Aberfeldy was the early leader, and piloted Nucleus, Beaumont, Airtight, and Red Fuchsia over the first fence (where Gala Day had fallen), where Glengariff came to grief. Passing the stands, Aberfeldy had command from Nucleus, Red Fuchsia, Airtight, Atareria, Beaumont, and Novar, and the Southerner was three lengths in front as they ran down the back. Nucleus and Red Fuchsia being ahead of Atareria, Airtight, Novar, and Beaumont. Red Fuchsia closed on the leader across the top, Nucleus, Novar, Atareria, and Airtight being the order of the others. Aberfeldy was in front racing for the last fence, but here Red Fuchsia gained a couple of lengths. They landed together, and a splendid race to the judge saw Red Fuchsia hold his own, winning by a head, with Novar six lengths behind them. Nucleus, Atareria, Airtight, and Beaumont was the order of the others. Grandstand Steeples With the defection of Nukumai and Brigadier Bill, eight were left to contest the Grandstand Steeplechase. Puwhcro was installed a warm favourite, with £I,OBO on his chances, Rangi i Sarto (£913) and Royal Dim (£457) being next fancied, but a surprise was in store, for two outsiders in Vexatious and Ballyfarnon filled the places, returning good dividends. Alaric and Royal Elm were the early leaders from Puwliero and Vexatious, but Puwhero ran up to the front when they reached the hencoop. Passing the stands the first time Puwhero and Alaric were in the lead, and were followed out of the straight by Kapuna, Royal Elm, Maunga. Vexatious, Ballyfarnon, and Rangi Sarto. With Puwhero pulling up, Kapuna and Alaric lead down the back, with Vexatious, Royal Elm, Maunga, Ballyfarnon, and Rangi Sartu following. Alaric came to grief at the hencoop. The order past the stands the second time was Kapuna, Vexatious, Ballyfarnon, Rangi Sarto, Royal Elm, and Maunga, two-length intervals separating the field. There was no change down ttie back. Across the top, Vexatious ran up to Kapuna, Ballyfarnon, Rangi Sarto, and Royal Elm being the only others in the picture. Vexatious jumped to the front at the hencoop, and held her own in the run to the judge, to win by three lengths from Ballyfarnon, who beat Kapuna by a head for second place. Rangi Sarto, Royal Elm, and Maunga followed at intervals.

Empire Handicap Paitonu £1,143, Le Choucas £752, and Ruanui £ 742' were the best backed trio in the Empire Handicap, Spearmiss £477 being the medium of heavy support among the others. Mithra bolted twice round during the preliminary and was withdrawn, the investments being returned. Day Guard was first to break the line, showing the way past the stands and out of the straight, followed by Ruanui, IJipo, Paitonu, Tcheka and Le Choucas. When they entered the back stretch he had three lengths break on Ruanui and Hipo, with Tcheka, Paitonu and Le Choucas next, and Joy Bird, Spearmiss and Kawhakina following in that order. Ruanui took the lead as they swung across the top, with Day Guard in close attendance, Hipo, Lc Choucas, Tcheka, Paitonu and Kawhakina being the order of the others, and Spearmiss wass till well back. The lastnamed made a run the turn when they entered the straight, where Ruanui, Le Choucas, Kawhakina and Spearmiss was the ordex*. Ruanui had a commanding lead at the distance, but then Spearmiss Hung out a challenge and. finishing at a great i-ate, caught Ruanui fifty yards from the post and beat him home by half a length. Le Choucas was two and a-half lengths away, and Kawhakina fourth. Right up with him were Tcheka, Hipo and Paitonu. Farewell Hack Whenuatonga was the only defection from the Farewell Hack. Big support was forthcoming for Coolmint £704, Havering £628 and High Society £532, St. Melba £lßl being rather neglected. They got away to a good start, and the first to break the line was Bank Note, with High Society, Acheria and Potoaform prominent. When they raced down to the three furlongs St. Melba. Archeria, Second Thought, Havering, High Society and Broxt was the order. St. Melba was tlio leader across the top and into the straight, Archeria, Havering and Broxt being in close attendance and Second Thought nearest of the bunch. Havering asserted his claim at the distance and came away to win easily by a length and a-half, St. Melba being three lengths ahead of Le Champ and Second Thought, followed by Catuna. High Society and War Flame. Winter Oats There was tlio usual big pool on the final race, the Winter Oats. It went over £5,000. Keddar £502, Black Duke £557, and Booster £521 were evenly supported, but so even was the betting that the seventh favourite, Benzora, who eventually won. had £383 on his chances. Black Duke was again slow to move out, and the first to become prominent were Keddar, Consent, Limited and Value. Running past the four furlongs, Value, Consent, Limited, Keddar, Dobbin, Benzora, Booster and Royal Damon was the order. Across the top Llanore had run closely attended by Llanore, Dubbin, Consent and Melissa also showing up. \ alue was first into the home stretch, closely attended by Ylanore, Dobbin. Benzora and Limited. The leaders were done with at the distance, and Benzora, Dobbin, Keddar. Black Duke and Value were spread across the course a hundred yards from the judge, to stage a splendid finish, in which Benzora won by half a length from Keddar, who was a long neck in front of Dobbin. Value and Black Duke were right up with the place-getters. First Acre. Limited. Consent and Bonogne comprised the next bunch. PAKURANGA HUNT

POOR DAY’S SPORT LORRY KILLS HOUND A. series of misfortunes dogged the Pakuranga Hunt on Saturday, when it. met at Kelly’s Corner, on the Great South Road, Papatoetoe. While the pack was travelling from the kennels to the scene of the meet, it encountered a motor-lorry, loaded with scorie, which ran into the pack, killing one of the best hounds. From this stage nothing went right, the scent throughout was very poor, a hare was “chopped” before it could make a get-away, and after a long draw in what is recognised as the best hunting-ground covered by the hunt, not a single quarry was located. The pack was thrown off for the first draw in Mr. Ferguson’s farm, and it was not long before a hare was raised which ran through Mr. A. Swaftield’s and over the hills into some rough country, where it was lost. A long draw resulted after the next throw off, and while passing through a field of oats, the pack unfortunately i “chopped” a hare before it could get on the run. The pack then drew for a long time over what is recognised as the happy hunting-ground for the hunt, but without success. A move was then made to Airs. Baker’s property, where a hare was soon on the run, which took the large Held for a good spin over Mr. Matthew’s, where it turned on to Mr. Gillard’s, and on to the Flat Bush Road, where it was lost. Another quarry was put up on Mr. Matthew’s farm, and after a sharp run of about a mile it was killed. There was a large number of enthusiasts who viewed the hunt from vantage-points along the road. Among the large held of followers were the Countess Matexa, Lord Waleran and Captain Orr-Ewing, from Government House.
