J. r. McKenzies new PREMISES CONNECT WITH HIGH STREET Queen Street will be made still more attractive when the new buildings to bo erected by Messrs. J. R. McKenzie, Ltd., tho well-known fancy goods firm, are completed. Operations were commenced last Tuesday. The cost is about £II,OOO. The new premises will be added to the shop now occupied by the. firm in Queen Street. They will extend from Queen Street back to High Street, and will bo about 44ft in width and 184 ft in depth. There will also be an extension to Vulcan Lane with a frontage of 38ft. The buildings will be two storeys high over Vulcan Lane and Queen Street, and three storeys over High. Street. At the expiration of tho present tenants’ leases over the present Queen Street shop, in about three years, several storeys will be added. Tho work necessitates the demolition of several old buildings at the rear of the present shop, and workmen commenced on the job last Tuesday. The contract is in the hands of the Fletcher Construction Co., Ltd. The firm intends to use the greater part of tho ground floor of the new premises as a “self-shopping” department. Goods of all descriptions will be exposed on glass counters and no salesmen will be employed. Customers will select their own goods and hand them to assistants who will wrap them up. . . , It is expected that this will appeal to the buying public, inasmuch as they will be free to inspect the goods at their leisure. , _ . The firm has already opened a branch in Wellington on similar lines, and though it has been open only two weeks it has been found necessary to take fn a. new floor with a depth of T-10ft to cope with the business.
