WHAT 'THE FOOL 'THOUGHT (Written for THE SUN) Shall 1 die like the grass, shall I pass Like the fioioer that is blown? Shall 1 drift with the leaves, like the sheaves r That ungarnered are strown ? Shall I mix with the rust and the dust All forgotten, unknown? For it s*ems —said The Fool—those were dreams Of a God on a throne.
In the -first cosmic plan there was Man (So they say). He arose Newly horn when that earliest morn Lit the first polar snows. Am I one said The Fool—with the sun? Do I die like the rose? Am I somebody's guest, or a jest? Ah, there’s nobody knows. For the Heaven of God’s love floats above, Yet it sweeps out below. Many a star that we think shines afar Perished aeons ago, Yet its light presses on through the night. Still undimmed, see, it glows, And its Why and its Whence don't make sense, And there’s none of us knows.
So I think, if I may, I will pray To a, God with more poise Than the one ivlio can scatter a sun And fill space with, his toys; A creature more kind, and whose mind Has a homelier note — Some Pan who can smile like a man Through the eyes of a goat.
By paths old as Time will I climb Up the hills that he takes, And laugh like a child at the wild Sudden music he makes. And perhaps, when I'm dead, overhead I shall hear, as they pass, The beat of his queer little feet In the innocent grass. A. GLADYS KERNOT. Rome.
