In declaring the show open the Minister congratulated the district C n staging such a first-class exhibition, and said he had rarely seen a bettpdisplay of roots and fruits. Aiur praising the butter and c heese exnibii s Mr. Cobbe referred to the part the Jersey cow had played in the develop, ment and prosperity the country which had don© more than all ttu politicians.

FAIR PRICES FOR MEAT Referring to the meat industry. Mr ; Cobbe said that if he could foretell th© market next year he would be -j. a position to make a fortune. Ho* i ever, no one could definitely say wh* i prices were going to be. but prospect* ! on th© whole were good. He woul<i not aav that exce’&si vely high price, were going to be obtained by \; K ' 1 farmer, but he was sure her v.ere going to get very fair prices. Th© prospects for wool were very | fair indeed. The tendency was ie so ! back to the stronger classes of wool i The fine wools had enjoyed a long run but tlie Romney breeders were now coming into their own. The pig j n . dustry was growing enormoush throughout the country. One feature was exportation of frozen pork, which in th© Minister's district had netted about 6d a lb. to the producers. OUTLOOK FOR DOMINION The outlook for the Dominion wju particularly good, continued the Minister. In round figures the exports last year had amounted to £57,000,000. while the imports totalled £45,000,00o! leaving a balance of £12,000,000 pr» the export side of the ledger. Two years ago the balance was somethin:; like £ 4,000,000 on the opposite side. A fact that farmers should be particularly proud of was that of th« £ 57,000,0000 worth of exports £53,250,000 came off tlie land. The latest bank returns showed that the deposits exceeded advances by something like £9,000,000. Two years ago the advances exceeded the deposits by approximately £5,000,000. Mr. Cobb© hoped that tlie improved financial position would not lead to undue extravagance on the part of the people or to excessive importations on th* part of business men. It was impossible for the Government to go on indefinitely subsidising relief works, some of which were not altogether remunerative. His idea was that the problem would never be corapletelv dealt with until the Dominion went in to a greater extent for closer settlement and more intensive farming
