MAIN HIGHWAY COSTS Mr. J. Darlington Whitmore, engineer to the Mount Roskill Road Board, submitted figures at the board’s meeting last evening showing the real and imaginary values of a Main Highway Board’s subsidy on a £2 for £1 basis, j The estimated cost of permanently 1 paving Mount Albert Road from the i Royal Oak to the board’s boundary, a j distance of about three miles, is i £62,000, but the actual sum to be rej ceived from the Highways Board amounts to only £15,619. This means that the board will have to raise the balance of £46,381 by way of loan. The chairman said it was imperative that the work should be put in hand and disposed of as soon as possible, and on his motion the question was referred Lo the finance committee to arrange details in connection with the loan proposals. In the absence of the chairman (Mr. E. F. Jones) owing to sickness, Mr. fc>. I. Goodall was voted to the chair. The Hospital Board notified that Mount Roskill’s contribution this year would amount to £2,661 6s. The clerk, Mr. J. Warren, reported that the curi rent year’s levy was slightly less than ; last year. To provide work for unemployed, it was agreed to call for tenders for Tutting gorse on Waikowhai Park. Messrs. J. McLennan and G. Vickers, representing several settlers in Roskill South, waited on the board to protest against the by-laws governing the sanitation of piggeries. Scarborough the works committee was delegated to inspect the properties in question and report at the board’s next meeting. Objection was taken by an advertising firm to the board’s charge of 10s a square yard for permission to erect advertising hoardings, the company complaining that the board would get more for the permit than they would get from the advertisers. Mr. Tansley said that the charges were made prohibitive on purpose to keep the district clear of disfigurement. Mr. E. A. Pearce, chairman of the works committee, stated that the fee was ten times in excess of that charged by otlvsr local bodies, but the board decided lo adhere to it.
