STEAMER SERVICES
SIR J. G. WARD THANKED FOR EFFORTS ADVERTISING IN ENGLAND Press Association DUNEDIN, Monday. In reply to a deputation from the Chamber of Commerce, which thanked Sir Joseph Ward for what was being done in connection with the Southern shipping service, the Prime Minister stated that the Government was advertising in England as well'as locally. They hoped that the local steamship company might get the service, but at any rate, the Government was determined that the service should be established. Wellington was included, because they intended to offer a.dual service, a steamer going each way. That was as near as they could get in the direction of encouraging the Union Company to tender. He was hopeful that. Victoria and Tasmania would cooperate with New’ Zealand in this matter, but at the worst the New Zealand Government was prepared to give a subsidy and provide for it for two years'. His opinion was that if the service was secured for two years it would always be maintained.
