CHRISTCHURCH COUNCIL

DR. THACKER IN KEY POSITION VOTING WITH COUNCIL (Special to THE SUN) CHRISTCHURCH. Today. The balance of power in the newly-created Christchurch City Council is held by Dr. Thacker and the first meeting, held last evening, disclosed that Labour generaly can count upon his support. Dr. Thacker was elected DeputyMayor by nine votes to eight, and the council then proceeded to the election of committees. Over a dozen divisions were taken, and on each Dr. Thacker voted with Labour. Realising that defeat was inevitable, members of the Citizens’ Association subsequently refused nomination, leaving the field clear for Labour nominees. A large attendance of the public formed a keenly interested gallery.
