SPRANG A LEAK

BELL BIRD TOWED TO PORT MISHAP ON THE KAIPARA Press Associatioji DARGAVILLE, Today. The small steamer Bell Bird owned by the Kaipara Shipping Company and trading between Helensville and Dargaville, sprang a leak while crossing the Kaipara Harbour last night. She was loaded with cargo of about 120 tons, principally manure. She limped into Pouto. a small wayside port, where the Ruawai. another of the company’s steamers, picked her up an.d took her in tow. They had not gone very ,far when they found that the water was gaining there being a foot of water in the after hold. The Ruawai then came alongside ancl relieved the Bell Bird of 20 tons of cargo itnd towed her to Naumai, where a quantity of cargo was discharged on to the wharf, which stopped the inflow of water. The leaks will be patched and the vessel taken back to Helensville for repairs. The Bell Bird is a wooden vessel and one of the oldest trading on the river. Captain Greig is in command.
