SIR THOMAS SMARTT DEAD

SOUTH AFRICAN LEADER ( United Service} CAPETOWN, Wednesday. The death took place to-day of Sir Thomas Smartt, aged 71. Deceased was known as the “Father of the Union Parliament.” Sir Thomas was a member of the South African Assembly, and belonged to the South African Party. He was Minister of Agriculture from 1921 to 1924, and Commissioner for Public Works in Cape Colony. He was also leader of the Unionist Party in South Africa. He was Colonial Secretary in the Sprigg Ministry in IS9B, Commissioner of Public Works in 1900, and Commissioner of Crown Lands and Public Works in the Jamieson Ministry of 1904. He was born in Ireland, and was trained for tire medical profession. In 1926 he led a South African Parliamentary delegation which visited Australia.
