FRANKLIN COUNTY COUNCIL

The Franklin County Council met yesterday, the chairman, Mr. J. N. Massey, M.P.. presiding. The engineer was instructed to erect signs at railway crossings. In reply to the Auckland TownPlanning Association’s representations j to refrain from damaging the bush j and the Maori pa on Peach Hill. [ Ramarama, it was decided to intimate | that every effort would be made by the quarrying contractors to prevent any j damage. The Auckland Harbour Board ad- j vised that it was agreeable to one , shell bank on the Manukau Harbour foreshore being reserved for the sole j use of the council, and that it could remove shell from any of the other hanks, royalty being fixed at one shilling a cubic yard. The work in connection with the Mauku Creek to Patumahoe drainage j area, recently approved, is to be put ! in hand at an early date. Representations were made by the j Amalgamated Society of Railway Serv- j ants to the council to provide for ; pedestrian traffic on the clay road ; from the railway settlement at Mercer to the Great South Road. It was i pointed out that no rates were received j from the land and in order to assist j the railwaymen it was agreed to ap- j proach the Railway Department for j financial assistance. The engineer reported that an en- j gineering survey of the proposed new j road from Whangarata to Pokeno had j boon made and the cost estimated at j £6.497 14s 3d for the route as at pres-. ent defined. However, if the alternative route necessary for increased traf- | fie was followed the expenditure would j be £5.934 ss. It was decided to con- ; vene a meeting of ratepayers to decide j upon the route desired, with the view ■ to having it declared a main highway.
