Awapuni Horses for Hawkes Bay

FINAL WORK-OUTS (Special to THE SUX) j PALMERSTON X.. Wednesday. | Heavy rain visited this centre at the week-end and, while the tracks were very heavy at Awapuni yesterday morning', the deluge was not unwelcome, for the tracks had become very hard. All the workers fulfilled their tasks on the course proper or Xo. 3 grass. A heavy mist made visibility very bad. The team to represent this centre at Hastings will be considerably smaller than had promised, dissatisfaction with the poundages having led Mrs. McDonald to forgoe the trip with Lacarno, Mountain Crag and Red Fuchsia—more particularly the last-named—while J-T. H. Doyle will keep Fee Simple at home. G. W. New, however, will take Blimp, Desert Lad. Tane and King Acre through, while L. Knapp will have Atareria and Hunting Boy, and J. P. Coyle Son o’ Mine, to represent their respective establishments. A Cup Trial Blimp (A. G. Murray), who had conditions to his liking, was sent over a mile on the grass proper, the flags being some 15 to 20ft out. the Gasbag gelding being partnered by Broad Acre (C. Broughton) over the first bit, with Lucky Bag (W. Broughton) to bring him homo over the last half-mile. Broad Acre had a little the worse of the jump out, but was in front after traversing a furlong, the first half-mile taking 55. Broad Acre dropped out after five find a-half furlongs, Lucky Bag making the Cup candidate do his best to complete his task in 1.50. The last half-mile was negotiated in the same time as the first half. Desert Lad (Murray) had Benmurc (C. Broughton) as a partner over six furlongs on the same track, the former coming home alone in 1.21. Benmure still continues to display his old habit of refusing to run out his tasks.

Hunting Boy (R. Reed), who figures as top-weight in the Xursery at Hastings, was sent along over five furlongs

in company with. Inflame (T. Metcalf) and Imperial Spark (K. Voitre). The last-named was slowest to find his feet, Hunting Boy and Inflame racing on terms to the straight entrance, where Imperial Spark moved up and then went on to beat Hunting Boy home very nicely, Inflame being a couple of lengths away. The distance was left behind in 1.6 2-5. The Jumpers Atareria (C. Robinson), who figures in the Mangatarata Hurdles at Hastings with 11.1, had the ’chaser Trouble as a companion on a round over five fences. Neither jumped very attrac- j tively, but Atareria seldom does in private, even if he sometimes varies it in public. Trouble won the Hunt Cup Steeplechase at Marton at the beginning of the season, with his owner, Mr. K. Duncan, in the saddle, and he promises to be in fair order when the winter activities are entered upon. Son o’ Mine (C. Robinson) and Mister Gamp (J. Blanche) recorded a much more finished effort when sent a similaf* task, the pace being on the whole way. Both fenced cleanly, but the superior condition of Mister Gamp enabled him to stay on the better. Son o’ Mine will take his place in the Mangatarata Hurdles at Hastings, in which he is in at the minimum. Vexatious, following her return from the Ellerslie fixture, where she annexed a matter of £7O by her second to Star of the East in the Mangere Steeplechase, is again in work. The Thurnham mare was sent a round over the steeplechase fences, but the pace was not on. Mountain Crag (A. McDonald), who looks all the better for his Master ton outings was given a couple of rounds over the bigger fences. Sinc«» being brought in the Mountain Knight gelding has done little jumping and he was inclined to fence high. Royal Lass, a half-sister to Mahuru, who, like the latter, is destined to carry the apple-green colours of Mr. C. F. Vallance. was schooled by Alan McDonald and made a promising showing. She was given an outing at the Aslihurst sports last week, but failed to gain a placing. Tiega (Alan McDonald) was schooled in company with the hunter Workman (Alister McDonald) over the battens, the Finland gelding making a very promising showing. He had, however, done a certain amount in private. Workman, incidentally, is a wellknown show-ring performer, who scored in the Consolation Steeplechase event at the Ashhurst sports last Wednesday. Puwhero, Red Bank and Novar were restricted to pace work on No. 3 grass. The former is rapidly being moulded into shape by L. Knapp for the steeplechase events ahead, the mentor having a lengthy string of unknown qualities for later on. The Limond —Tivoli gelding, Roundelay, in G. Jones’s stable, is not being hurried, and is steadily being moulded into a very attractive horse. In company with Archeria, the youngster ran home from the three-furlong post on .he grass proper in 39 1-5. Fee Simple, while he will not make the trip through to Hastings, will go South to the Nelson fixture at the end of the month. With T. Stokes in the saddle, the Acre gelding was sent over five furlongs on the grass proper, the last three furlongs being left behind in about 41.
