NEW LAND DISTRICT

KING COUNTRY MOVEMENT CONFERENCE ARRANGED l From Our Own Correspondent) TAUMARUNUI, Tuesday. Such hearty and widespread support has been given to the Taumarunui Chamber of Commerce proposal for the creation of a npw land district embracing all areas along the centre of the Main Trunk line, that the chamber has resolved to place the whole question in the hands of the larger body, the King Country Advancement League, which is working along the same lines. The league is adopting the attitude that the King Country portion of the Main Trunk line offers better economic opportunities for placing men on the land than any other part of the Dominion, though so far it has not come into the Government's scheme to open up fresh country for settlement. The time is considered ripe for placing this enormous tract of country in its proper perspective before the Government, with a view to action being taken to develop it along the right lines. With this end in view a conference of all interested bodies, whether associated with the Advancement League or not, will be held at Te Kuiti on April 30. when the whole question of land settlement as it affects the districts concerned will be discussed, and if the conference approves, a deputation will be appointed to interview the Prime Minister in Wellington regarding the claims of the district. It is claimed that along the Main Trunk there are hundreds of thousands of acres of land awaiting only the necessary capital and energy to make them reproductive and re-venue-producing.
