“PRACTICALLY BANKRUPT”

CITY COUNCIL’S POSITION MR. W. H. MURRAY’S VIEWS “The City Council is practically bankrupt and I challenge the Mayor the treasurer, or any one connected with the council to say otherwise. Whether I go back or not your rates will be increased. This statement was made by Cr. W. H. Murray at the Grey Lynn Library last evening in furthering his campaign for the mayoralty. A large j number of ratepayers was present. “What 1 have seen during two years on the City Council —its administration and business dealing—has caused j me to aspire to the highest honour > citizens can bestow upon their tel- t low citizen. It was not my idea. I decided to accede to requests that were made to me.” said Mr. Murray. “If 1 am elected as Mayor I will not j go in as a figure-head but. as on ordinary every-day business man.” The candidate put forward his policy and outlined the planks of his platform. He criticised the amalgamation of Avondale and Tamaki with the city, the staff work in connection with the Mount Eden Reservoir, the ticket system of voting, the organ and band recitals, and the raising of the salaries of th£ higher paid civil servants. Various other questions were dealt j with by the candidate. Mr. H. P. “ Taylor and the ohairmau. Mr. J. R. Lundon, also spoke. A vote of thanks and confidence in the candidate was carried.
