AMUNDSEN’S BASE
ANTARCTIC PUZZLE SEARCH BY BYRD'S MEN (United ServiceJ NEW YORK, Saturday. Wireless to the "New York Times.” BAY OP WHALES, Friday. An attempt to find Framheim, the late Captain Roald Amundsen’s base when he stayed here in 1911-12, is being made now that most of the camp work is done and there is time for recreation from the laborious duties of the last few months. It is much like looking for a needle in a haystack, but in spite of the low temperature (38 degrees below zero) it is an interesting puzzle and nearly everyone wants to participate in its solution. Framheim should be four miles south, near the great pressure area at the foot of the bay. There are peculiar hills, a snow plateau, basins and passes there, some of which seem to correspondent with similar features described by Amundsen. However, so far the location of his hut has eluded the most careful and diligent search. This is not so remarkable as it might seem to those who have not been ashore for any length of time on this side of the Barrier. Enormous differences in the contour of Hue area have been effected in 17 years.
