TROTTING

Native Hero at a Big Price

FAVOURITES’ BAD DAY WANGANUI’S FINAL (Special to THE SUN) WANGANUI, Saturday. The Wanganui Trotting Club’s fixture concluded to-day, when a record in every way was registered. The weather was splendid until the sixth race, when heavy rain fell, but did not affect the track conditions. The attendance was only fair at the start, but increased to large dimensions as the day advanced. The racing was of a high standard, many exciting finishes being witnessed, while outsiders had a most successful day. A pleasing feature of the meeting was the substantial increase in the totalisator revenue, which reached £3,755. The figures for the day were £11,167, against £8.705 on the concluding day last year, while for the fixture the total was £19,’T46, compared with 15,991 for the 1928 fixture. • The inquiry in connection with the running of various horses in the President’s Trot on Thursday concluded to-day. when, after expressing dissatisfaction with the running of several candidates the committee decided to take no further action. Improvers’ Handicap Pumahaka was allowed to start at a good price in the Improvers’ Handicap, despite a second in the saddle race on Thursday, and going to the front, won all the way with comfort. Lee Nelson was made a warm favourite and trailed the leader into the straight, but faded out at * the final pinch, allowing Lady Author (who was second choice) to raise the hopes of backers. However, the outsider Trumpeter showed dash at the finish and was second, three lengths behind Pumahaka, with Lady Author a length, away third, and Lee Nelson was fourth and Rita Thorpe a poor fifth. Borough Handicap Bessie Bingen was elected favourite for the Borough Handicap, and Price quickly took the mare to the front, where she remained to win by eight lengths. Great Bingen’s sister never put a foot wrong and gave a promising exhibition. Octachord and Haviland attended the leader most of the way, but the latter was galloping at intervals and Alton Brook ran into third place three furlongs from home. In the straight Berkett headed Octachord, who faded out, and finished second, four lengths ahead of Haviland. Then came Le Campione, Octachord and Wild Downs. .

Suburban Handicap Flit on, a hot pot for the Suburban Handicap, flattered his supporters for a mile, but then went to the pack to finish practically last. Nathaniel was the early leader from Electric Gold, Mild Derby and Jasper, and there was no alteration over the first mile, where Fliton had moved up to Jasper. Crossing the top Electric Gold assumed the lead, and although strongly challenged by Mild Derby he won by two lengths to pay just over double figures. Louie Dillon finished fast and got into third place, with Jasper, Tawa King and All Red next to arrive. Liverpool Handicap The favourites got another bad spin ill the Liverpool Handicap, Great Delight, Logan’s Pride and Haerenga Pai the chief selections, all being outside the places. Native Hero was the early leader, followed by Logan’s Pride, Warspite, Hilltop and Haerenga Pai, but with six furlongs gone the last-named rushed to the front and piloted the field past the mile post in 2.22, Logan’s Pride, Hilltop and Native Hero being in close formation. Along the back Native Hero joined Haerenga Pai and Wakefield moved up to the pair. Crossing the top Haerenga Pai lost her position, while Native Hero and Wakefield cleared away, entering the straight almost on terms, with Sailor Boy three lengths back leading Warspite, with Great Delight making his run. In a punishing" finish Native Hero lasted long enough to win by half a length from Wakefield, Warspite, three lengths away, third, followed by Sailor Boy. Great Delight and Logan’s Pride. The winner paid a royal price. Liverpool Handicap

Well ridden by young Nyhan, Our Nancy, who was second choice.to Waitipopo for the Liverpool Handicap (saddle) came from well back in the

straight to score a. popular win by a little over a length. Welcome Pearl. Waitipopo. Pumahaka and Mary Brown began well and were the early leaders, but Lady Jewell went through the field in great style to hit the front at the half mile. She was done in the run home, and both Pumahaka and the favourite parsed her before the judge was reached. Welcome Pearl did best of the others. Ballance Handicap Rain set in before the Ballance Handicap, which waa run in a heavy shower. Wild Downs went away with a good lead and was still in front with a mile gone from Peter Eyre, Altonbrook, Haviland, Brian Bingen and Bright Light. Along the back the leader broke, Altonbrook going to the front, and lie led into the straight from Brian Bingen, Peter Eyre, Wild Downs and Bright Light. Nothing had a ‘chance with Berkett in the run home, and he won by four lengths from Brian Bingen, who was a length ahead of Wild Downs, with Peter Eyre and Bright Light next. Wanganui Stakes Backed down to a very short price. Little Guy, after going away slowly and later being in a good position, was well beaten in the Wanganui stakes. Rita Thorpe led Richmond Lass, El Direct and Little Guy for a mile, where El Direct took command. Along the back Electric Gold moved up fast, but broke, losing a lot of ground. Richmond Lass headed El Direct at the halfmile post. Little Guy going well in third place. Richmond Lass left the field standing and won by five lengths, Electric Gold coming fast and securing second place by a neck from the tiring El Direct. Speed King was fourth and the favourite last. Farewell Handicap After a good showing on Thursday, Logan’s Pride was allowed to pay a false price in the Farewell Handicap. He was always in the picture, and when it came to the final rally had too much speed for Warspite, who was favourite and went a good race. Karma, also well supported, was one of the early leaders, but was beaten into third place at the judge. Haerenga Pai, after losing a lot of ground, finished fourth, and Castle Chimes was next to cross the line. Following are the results: Improvers’ Handicap, of £80; li miles. —5 Pumahaka, limit, W.
