First Day’s Form Hard to Follow

MASTERTON’S FINAL DAY LAST CRUST’S SURPRISE (Special to THE SUN) MASTERTON, Saturday. Though the weather was fine for the concluding day of the Masterton races, the course was heavy, as there had been overnight rain. The racing was interesting, but not in all cases was the form easy to follow. For the two days the totalisator handled £28,701,’ an increase of £5,795. Second High-Weight The best backed of the Seqond HighWeight field were Starboard Light and Airtight. Starboard Light pulled to the front and leading into the straight drew away and won by four lengths from Airtight, who beat Lady Gay by hal f * for second, with Elicit and Black Mint next. Black Mint was unlucky. High Society went out at a very short price on acount of his win at Tauherenikau, but he was bea/ten in a great finish. He was in front at the distance, but Glare, hard ridden, got t , head fr °m Streamer, with High Society only half a head away third. Tane was a close fourth and Glen Dhu fifth. Glare and Streamer both improved, particularly Streamer. Waipipi Handicap In an even betting race Footpad was favourite for the Waipipi Handicap, but he finished last. Spearopa ran to the front and led First Ruler and Billion into the straight. Then Billion came to the front and at one stage it looked as if he would win easily, but he hat! to be kept going, as St. Melba and Monetize finished well. Billion won by a length from St. Melba, with Monetize only a head away third and Spearopa fourth. Billion improved a lot with the race he had on the first day and as generally anticipated St. Melba ran a good race. Cave Handicap Retract was nearly as well backed as Oral for the Cave Handicap, but was not good enough. Hunting Call and Courtlike took up the early running and led Tobaccoland and Oral into the straight. Oral looked like winning, but in a fine finish Courtlike won by a head. Tobaccoland was only a nose away third and Hunting Call a close' fourth, while Ben Hur, Retract and Push followed. Opaki Handicap Bonogne, with Reed up, was looked on as the best proposition in the Opaki Handicap, and he went very close to winning. Joy Bird did the early leading from Teri, Tcheka, Rameses and Bonogne. Bonogrie looked a winner at« the distance, but Rameses responded to the whip and won by a neck. Joy Bird was a close third and Teri a good fourths Locarno was next. Miki Miki Hack Backers laid odds on Atholspear in the Miki Miki Handicap, and though he ran a good race he failed. He followed Full Mark and into the straight, but Full Mark drew away and won by nearly two lengths, while Atholspear had his work cut out to beat Royal Black and Aurora Borealis for second place. Full Mark only confirmed the opinion that he was very unlucky the first day. Macara Handicap A surprise that came to light in the Macara Handicap was one of- the titbits of the meeting. Quantum was at a short price, but after looking all over a winner half-way along 'the straight Last Crust worried him out of first place by a head. Veronese was a fair third and Miss Ransom fourth. Last Crust paid the best dividend of the meeting. Farewell Handicap The meeting ended with the Farewell Handicap, for which Arrow Boy was favourite, with Second Thought next in demand. Money Mint and. Arrow Boy led into the straight, and there Arrow Boy took charge, but in the last furlong Second Thought and Roi de Val came at him and Second Thought won by a neck, while Roi de Val was half a length in front of the favourite, with Imitation fourth and Money Mint fifth.
