NEW RESTRICTIONS
USE OF DANISH SEINE An Order-in-Council just gazetted ! imposes further restrictions on Danish ! seining and trawling in the Hauraki Gulf. Trawling was formerly restricted to j waters outside a line crossing the gulf j from Cabbage *Bay to Tiri Tiri Island ] and thence to the Xortli Mahurangi ; Head. During the summer, from November 1 6 to March 15. the limit is now i moved out to a line from Cape Col- j ville to Rodney Point, while, during j the remainder of the year the line will j run eastward from the north head of j Colville Bay to Tiri Tiri Island, thence j northward to Flat Rock, thence due | north to the summer line mentioned and from the point of intersection I westward to Rodney Point Danish seining from vessels exceeding 50ft overall is prohibited through- | out tli© year in waters within the line ! last described. 1 Danish seining from smaller vessels is prohibited throughout the year in waters within a line running from Gull Point (Deep Creek) southward to Rangitoto Beacon, thence generally a Hong the southern shores of Rangitoto, Wai~ heke and Ponui Islands to the Ponui Passage, and thence along the FLrtli of Thames to Deadman Point, south of Coromandel Harbour. Certain waters in and near Coromandel Harbour, and the whole of Mahurangi Harbour. Bon Accord Harbour at Kawau. and tlie Manukau and IJf ipara Harbours, are' also covered in the prohibition. During the period from November ! 16 to January 31, all netting, with certain exceptions, is prohibited within a triangle bounded by a line from Takatu Point, north of Kawau Island. to Kauri Point on Waiheke Island, thence by the northern shores of Waiheke, Motutapu and Rangitoto, to Gull Point, and thence northward by the shore to the starting point. Tlie prohibition does not apply to Bon Accord Harbour nor to set nets for flounders-, soles or mullet, nor to drag nets for herring and piper. A Danish seine is defined by the regulations as «>- net with a warp attached to eacn wing and operated by being drawn over the sea bottom b> power provided by an engine-driven winch. The mesh in the last three yards of the cod-end of the seine must measure, when prepared for use, not less than 41m. The use of an otterboard with* a Danish seine is prohibited, and it is to be an offence to have one on board a vessel engaged in Danish seining. Xo vessel may have a Danish seine on board when engaged in trawling. The maximum penalty for a breach of the regulations has been fixed at £ 50.
