Labour’s Bid for City Seats

NOMINATIONS CLOSE ON WEDNESDAY' LABOUR i.s making a strong bid for City Council seats. and of the 25 nominations in the hands of the Returning Officer, Mr. P. F. Notlev. at noon to-day, 11 are for Labour candidates. Some interesting contests are promised in the Hospital Board, Harbour Board and Waitemata Power Board, as well as in those of various suburban councils.

nomination of Mr. T. Bloodworth, Labour candidate for the Mayoralty of Auckland, was put in on Saturday. His was the first. Mr. Blood worth is also nominated for tiie Harbour Board and City Council. The last-mentioned nomination is under a clause in the Act which allows a candidate to stand for Mayor and councillor, and in the event of him being unsuccessful in the former he has a chance of being returned to the council, instead of missing in both cases as Mr. Bloodworm did last year when he was nominated only for the Mayoralty. A candidate of some interest is Mr. E>. Donaldson, a brother of the retiring Mayor of Newmarket, and once Mayor of Waihi.

The list of nominations for the City Council in the order received is as follows: —Messrs. John Dempsey, Hallyburton Johnstone, J. A. C. Allum, T. Bloodworth, R. F. Barter, FT. G. Staley, Hugh Campbell, Miss Alice M. Cassie, Messrs. J. Purtell, J. H. K. Kealy. D. Donaldson. G. G. Ashley. F. W. Matthews, Miss Edna G. Macky, Messrs. H. Woodroft, J. H. B. Paterson, F. TV. Schramm, G. L. Brett, James Grace, J. T. Jennings, J. O. Liddell, J. IT. Ansell, P. J. Goldfinch, M. J. Coyle and J. H. S. Adeane. A deputation from the Grafton Ratepayers’ Association, headed by Mr. F. Nicholson, and including Messrs. R. McVeagh, H. Coldicutt. A. J 3. Chappell, E. Crawsliaw, J. IT. Ansell. J. Stewart, IT. Richards, and C. A. Allan, waited upon Mr. J. F. Shanly requesting him to accept nomination as councillor at the forthcoming election of the Auckland City Council. Mr. Shanly acceded to the request, and thanked the deputation for the confidence thus placed in him. HOSPITAL BOARD Mr. J. Dempsey, a member of the Hospital Board, lias been nominated, together with three women representing Labour interests —Mrs. Cassie. Mrs. M. M./Dreaver, and Mrs. Ivy McCready. HARBOUR BOARD The four nominations so far received for the. Auckland Harbour Board are Messrs. T. Bloodworth, J. B. Johnston, G. L. Brett, and E. W. Inder. The Harbour Board elections promise to be more interesting this year than usual. The present chairman. Mr. Hugh Mackenzie, will have opposition in his Franklin district for the first time for 16 years. The opponent will be Mr. Ebenezer Allen. WAITEMATA POWER BOARD Alterations in the representation j have created :i new position in the election of the Waitemata Power Board. The combinations of boroughs will be broken up. Devon port will return three members, Taka puna two. Northcote and Birkenhead one each. New Lynn one, and Waitemata County three. Helensville will in future be linked with Henderson and Glen Eden. There i.s every prospect of an exceptionally keen contest for seats on the Birkenhead Borough Council at Unforthcoming local body elections. Three further nominations have been received for council seats, m air. H. A. Campbell, Mr. Jackson Iverruisli and Mr. J. Prickett.
