Blomfield and Company, Auck- | land. I Entries for the Marton J.C. winter ; fixture on May 4 close at 9 p.m., on Tuesday next, April 16. • Nominations for the principal events j on the winter programme of the Aucki land R.C. Great Northern meeting must be made by 5 p.m. next Friday, April 19. Nominations for the winter meeting at Hawera of the Egmont R.C. close at 8.30 p.m. on Monday, April 22. Wanganui Jockey Club’s winter fixture nominations close at 8 p.m. on Monday, April 29. Riding Engagements Providing the undermentioned horses carry out thir engagements at Whangarei next week they will have associated with them the following jockeys:—E. Stanway, Ned Kelly; R. 1 AlcTavish, Lady Eustace, Palmares, I The Thorn, Valiar, Corinax and WelI come Home; L. Dulieu. Ripon Abbey; H. Dulieu, Sir Archie: and E. Ludlow, .Bulolo. Back Again After a spell extending over several months Mountain Guide has been rej commissioned and was out doing usei ful pace work at Ellerslie yesterday morning. T. Carmont has charge of the Mountain Knight gelding, and with the tracks in an easier state he should prove a payable proposition during the next few months, i Due Shortly No horse has shown more consistent form in its last few starts than the maiden performer Archileen. She ran without luck at Avondale, and a coincidence—an unlucky one at that—was that she drew No. 17 marble on both days, placing her on the extreme outer in Wednesday’s race. The extra ground she had perforce to cover made all the difference between winning and losing, and it was obvious that better drawn Archileen would have made Arihana’s task much more difficult. Archileen is improving with each race and cannot be far off a winning bracket. His First Ride An apprentice jockey, W. Gough, a son of the well-known Avondale trainer of that name, is to have his first ride at the Whangarei meeting next week, when he will pilot Frothblower. Gough has ridden plenty of work on the tracks, and as he shows ability should not lack for opportunities. He can go to scale at about 7.5. For Australia Hot Spring (Chief Ruler—Tinkler), Rose Glow and Catilex (Lord Quex — Catalini) ar© to be sent over to Australia, and will join Jet Black in Sydney. They ar© not likely to return to the Dominion. Won Five Out of Seven Arikinui (Chief Ruler—Celmisia) has been turned out for a spell. He is growing fast, and Mr. J. B. Gaisford is probably wise in giving him an easy time. In his three-year-old career Arikinui j has scored five firsts and one second in seven starts. Marton Meeting Local trainers are beginning to send their charges along on the Marton tracks in view of the forthcoming steeplechase meeting on Saturday, May 4. Nominations close on Tuesday next at 9 p.m. There is every indication of the meeting being a‘great success. The tracks are in tip-top condition, and all that is required is a few hours’ rain in order ot take the sting out of the steeplechase course, which is a bit hard for schooling. A Hard One An exchange reports that Decoy Bird looked like giving A. E. Ellis a comfortable win in the Metropolitan Handicap at Greymouth, but he crumpled up when asked to stave off Corinthic. Decoy Bird has not made himself very popular with owners since being purchased in Sydney as a yearling by G. Brice for Mr. A. B. Williams, who later disposed of him to Dr. A. H. Gilmer for a sum in the region of 800 guineas. It was thought likely that a change of environment would bring better fortune, but evidently manners do not come under this heading. Won Big Money Sydney owners have found most of the big prizes of the A.J.C. autumn meeting going out of their hands. Mr. "W. Carleton” heads the list through the win of Crucis in the Sydney Cup, mut following him are two New Zealanders, Messrs. G. D. Greenwood and H. A. Knight. Behind that pair are the Victorians, Messrs. Sol Green and C. Baillieu, and W. Robinson. The New Zealand invasion was made all the more successful by the jockey, T. Green, who has earned more in winning percentages than any other rider iat the meeting. Mr. “Carleton” was enriched in stakes alone by £5,312, in a little over three minutes in the Sydned Cup, and Mr. Greenwood was an even quicker worker with £4,903 in less than a minute and a-half. Honour’s win in th© Sires’ Produce earned him that. Details of the owners’ winnings over the first three days of the Randwick meeting are:—Mr. “W. Carleton” (Ist, Sydney Cup), £5,312; Mr. G. D. Greenwood (Ist, Sires’ Produce), £4.903; Mr. H. A. Knight, Ist, Autumn tSakes; Ist, Second Division Highweight; Ist, Tocal Handicap; 2nd, AllAged Stakes), £4,628; Mr. Sol Green (Ist, St. Leger; Ist, Cumberland; 3rd. City Handicap), £3,849; Messrs. C. Bailleu and W. Robinson (Ist, Champagne), £3,115: Messrs. E. L. Baillieu and “Mr. Constanble” (Ist, Doncaster), £3.051; Mr. E. M. Pearce (Ist, AllAged Stakes), £2,224; Mr. “R. L. de Percy” (2nd, Sires’ Produce; deadheat, Second Champagne Stakes), £1,450; Mr. A. J. Winter (2nd, Sydney Cup), £1,200: Messrs. L. C. and H. White (Ist. Coogee Handicap), £958; Mr. B. S. Irvin (3rd. Sires’ Produce; dead-heat. Second, Champagne), £950; Mr. “I. Felix” (2nd, Doncaster; 3rd, AllAged Stakes), £900: Mr. P. Miller (Ist, Flying Handicap). £870! Mr. L. K. S. Mackinnon (Ist, Easter Stakes), £828; Mr. A. J. Toxwood and Dr. Milsom (Ist, City Handicap). £794; Messrs. R. H. and B. H. Edkins (2nd, Easter Stakes; dead heat. First Wentworth Handicap), £770&; Mr. F. A. Moses (Ist, First Division High-weight), £702; Mr. E. K. White (2nd, Autumn Stakes; 3rd, Cumberland Stakes). £700: Mr. T. O’Dea (2nd, Sydney Cup), £6OO.

More Youngsters Dominion owners were busy at the recent Randwick yearling sales, and most of their purchases were not very costly. No less than fifteen yearlings are due to arrive in Auckland by the Ulimaroa next Tuesday. Nearly a Big One Orol’s recent Feilding form was responsible for th© Chief Ruler filly being made favourite at Masterton yesterday, and although badly drawn she duly landed. Hunting Call, a half brother by Hunting Song to that good horse Royal Blood, nearly brought off a big surprise. Unlike his distinguished relative (who is a black, like his dam), the colt is a bright chestnut in colour. Whangarei in Autumn -Everything is in train for the autumn meeting of the Whangarei Racing Club, to be held at Whangarei next Thursday and Saturday. A special horse train leaves here on Tuesday afternoon. Special train and boat arrangements for the convenience of sportsmen has been arranged, the train leaving Auckland at 6 a.m. each day, and leaves Whangarei on the return at 5.51 p.m. The club’s course will be in great order after the rain, for the loamy soil can take quite a lot of moisture. Gala Meeting The Western Australian Club will hold a gala meeting at Perth on October 12. The meeting will be run in conjunction with the centenary celebrations, and will take place during the height of the festivities. The stake that will go to the winner of the principal event, the Centenary Cup, is worth £2,000, while it also carries a handsome gold cup presented by the Prince of Wales. Schooling at Marton Warfille has been schooled over hurdles since the Feilding meeting, and with L. Morris in the saddle, gave a first-class display over six hurdles, jumping fast and clean throughout. Nucleus (L. Morris) and Earl of Ashlea (L. Jarvis), a recent addition to F. McKay’s stables, were companions over four fences, both giving a good display. Others doing pace work on Thursday morning were Royal Damon, Some Acre, Vast Acre, Banjuke, Alaric. Nasselle and Kilbrook (a hunter owned by Mr. J. McDonell and a half-brother to Bonny Ril). J. Morris is handling a couple of yearlings, which look very promising, by Nigger Minstrel—Miss Footstep, and by Shambles —Sky Dream (imp.). Win For Idun Advices from Western Australia convey the information that the ex-Winga-tui rider, C. Dawson, rode three winners ever hurdles recently. The success included the principal hurdle race run on Easter Monday. The Valkyrian filly, Idun, taken over by C. Christie, was also a recent winner in that part of the world. A Clean Race That the 3 929 Sydney Cup was one of the cleanest races in the history of the event is the impression gained from statements of some of the jockeys who rode in the race. Apparently Winalot was the only horse whose progress was checked by interference, and in his case it was made to look infinitely worse by the horse throwing his head in the air when Pike tightened the reins. Winalot does this even in his preliminary if his rider changes his hold.

Gothic Finished Mr. Sol Green was disappointed last wetek that he could not take the opportunity of a crack at Mollison and Limerick in the weight-for-age All-aged Stakes. Possibly in fine weather he would have tackled the champions. Since his going amiss at the Victorian autumn meetings, every attempt had been made to fit him for a final tussle with Limerick in the one race, the AllAged Stakes, and he had been reserved for that event. Possibly the chance would have been taken if the weather had been fine. But a doubtful horse on a wet track is too big a risk. Gothic might have broken down beyond repair, even for the stud, so he was scratched. Mr. Green says he will not race again, and willvgo to the stud. Big Riding Fees

For the first three days of the recent A.J.C. meeting at Randwick the fees coming to the winning jockeys were as follow; —T. Green (Ist, Sires’ -Produce; Ist City Handicap), £283 12s; J. Pike (Ist, St. Leger; Ist Champagne), £277 14s; W. Cook (Ist, Sydney Cup), £254 2s; M. McCarten (Ist, Autumn Stakes; Ist. Second Division Higliweight; Ist, Tocal Handicap), £177 2s; J. Toohey (Ist, Doncaster), £lsl Is; J. Daniels (Ist. All-Aged Stakes), £llO 9s: E. Bar tie (Ist. First Division-High-weight; Ist, Flying Handicap), £B6 16s: A.
